82: Anoint Your Eyes With Clay

The following interaction between the Lord and Enoch is recorded in the scriptures:

“And the Lord spake unto Enoch, and said unto him: Anoint thine eyes with clay, and wash them, and thou shalt see. And he did so. And he beheld the spirits that God had created; and he beheld also things which were not visible to the natural eye; and from thenceforth came the saying abroad in the land: A seer hath the Lord raised up unto his people.” Moses 6:35-36

This begs the question, when the Lord said “anoint thine eyes with clay, and wash them, and thou shalt see,” was the Lord suggesting the idea that Enoch should put some dirt in his eyes after which he should was the dirt out, and that by so doing he would have better vision?

I suppose that is one interpretation.

However there is another interpretation that is probably more in line with the scriptures as a whole.

Consider the fact that God has referred to us, His jewels, as “tabernacles of clay.”

In other words, the Lord was giving Enough specific instruction as follows:

(1) Anoint thine eyes with clay = to see people as God sees them, and to prioritize serving them and loving them above all else.
(2) And wash them = to help others come unto Christ and be washed of their sins through His Atonement, so that they might also be pure.
(3) And thou shalt see = to come to see others not as they currently appear, but to see them as God sees them, or as they might become.

This scripture then reads “And he did so, and he beheld the spirits that God had created.”

By putting people in front of money or fame or worldly glory, and by coming to see others as God sees them, and by laboring to help others partake of the Atonement, Enoch was then able to come to see the spirits that God had created. Furthermore, he came to behold things that were not visible to the nature eye. In other words, he no longer saw others as they currently were, but as they could become. He came to see as God sees.

Finally, the scripture concludes by reading “A seer has the Lord raised up unto his people.”

It should be noted that although a “seer” has many meanings, one meaning is the idea that one is able to see others not as they currently are, but as they can become. Furthermore, they are able to perceive how God loves all (even the difficult people that are often hard to love), and they are able to see how God operates to help reclaim all of his jewels. With this ability and power (this sight), they are able to perceive events that are about to unfold as God orchestrates things to lead to the salvation of His precious children.
